Take a moment to watch this Dr. Drew clip, featuring Lenore Skenazy, author of Free-Range Kids, which presents thoughts about letting kids visit their local parks on their own for what she is encouraging: Take Your Kids to the Park… and Leave Them There Saturday.
This is well worth the discussion. The Donahues are taking from this story that there needs to be a nice medium. Are we overwhelmed by “stranger danger?” Are we helicoptering parenting our children out of their childhoods? We may never drop off our kiddos on their own, but we can certainly empower our children to know what to do in case something happens to Daddy on a hike. We can let them have a chance to go around the corner to play. This is coming from the dad who has in the past had worries about letting my kids play in their own yard.
Lenore is encouraging us to break through this mental wall that we have set up concerning our fears about our children. The constantly available media fuels these fears for me. Horrible news is just waiting around the corner at any time. But we can’t let those fears overrule our common sense.
The interview cuts quickly, leaving much discussion to be had. We encourage you to sit down and discuss this thought with your family.
