You’re Invited…to help FRIENDS plant tree seedlings!
Saturday, March 19th, 2011
10am – Noon
Blue Ridge Parkway Milepost 113.3
Saving Parkway Views is FRIENDS of the Blue Ridge Parkway’s signature project. FRIENDS is the only authorized Blue Ridge Parkway partner organization that has been given this project “to restore the Parkway views through landscape plantings” under a formal agreement between FRIENDS and the National Park Service. FRIENDS needs adult and youth volunteers to help plant 500 seedlings at Milepost 113.3, just north of Hardy Road on the western side of the Parkway.
FRIENDS of the Blue Ridge Parkway is an environmental nonprofit volunteer organization that is dedicated to preserving “America’s Favorite Drive”, the Blue Ridge Parkway. FRIENDS began in 1988 and is based in the Roanoke Valley. Our membership continues to grow with now over 9,000 members nationally, but WE NEED YOUR HELP to SAVE the Blue Ridge Parkway VIEWS.
Families and children of all ages are encouraged to become a part of this event. A contractor will dig the holes for the seedlings and all materials needed for planting will be provided. Volunteers will receive training on how to plant trees for the best chance of survival (no experience necessary). Volunteers will plant the seedlings and protect them with tree shelters, mats, and stakes. The final touch is a good drink of water (for the tree, and the workers!).
At the planting site, there will be a Refreshment Tent providing snacks, soft drinks, hot spiced cider, hot chocolate, tea, coffee and water. We will also have a children’s Art Tent with ”Express yourself through Art” with Polly Branch.
Ø The Blue Ridge Parkway requires each participant to complete a Volunteer Services Agreement (VSA) form before participating. If you have not been given a copy of this form, please contact FRIENDS’ office at 772-2992 or email Katie_murray@friendsbrp.org. Each form may be copied as necessary. Please mail the completed forms, to arrive at our office NO LATER THAN MARCH 15th. Parents need to give signed permission for children to participate.
Ø Wear your favorite (and WARM) work clothes and join us for this special and fun time. Due to possible cold weather and muddy conditions, please wear boots or appropriate shoes (no sandals or flip-flops), and bring garden/work gloves. We also would appreciate your bringing a shovel, rake, 1-gallon jug, and if you have them, a 5-gallon bucket and rubber mallet. The mallet is used to help pound the stakes and tubes into the ground. Please MARK YOUR TOOLS WITH YOUR NAME AND TELEPHONE NUMBER in case your tools are mixed in with other volunteers’ equipment. If you don’t have equipment please don’t worry as EVERYONE is welcome!
Call our office at (540) 772-2992 or (800) 228-7275 if you have any questions!
